(30.04.2008) For the purpose of contributing to the development of a quality education keyed to the comprehensive development of individuals, respect for diversity, and the elimination of school-related violence and discrimination, UNESCO's Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean in collaboration with the Cluster Office for Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, will conduct an international meeting on “Culture of Peace, Education and Teacher Training” (29 and 30 April, Quito).

During this event, specialists from Latin America and the Caribbean and ministries of Education officials, directors, principals, teachers and social leaders will discuss the need to adopt a concept of quality of education that along with developing cognitive skills promotes the development of social, emotional and ethical abilities.

A comprehensive quality-oriented approach must value and respect diversity, as well as the needs and capabilities of each individual, and foster a school climate conducive to integration, mutual respect, and peaceful conflict resolution by encouraging dialogue between the various educational community stakeholders.

Education for peace, the flag that UNESCO has flown since its very beginning, has thus become an essential part of quality education for all. Thus, Education for peace represents a genuine space for dialogue since it can build awareness and promote the understanding of essential human rights, respect for the “other” and the acquisition of specialized knowledge that will contribute to the creation and consolidation of a culture of peace.

Much of the event will be devoted to discussing strategies designed to support teachers’ professional activities and transform schools into spaces where the concept of culture of peace is alive and continuously being replicated, and where a climate that stimulates learning is guaranteed.
