EDUCAVIDA, a pilot initiative for rural populations spanning April 2005 through September 2006, is part of the Education for All programme, a global initiative coordinated by UNESCO. The initiative is supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participating municipalities and Ministries of Education.
The consolidation of joint actions between local governments, educators, and social organizations geared towards improving the educational system and its governance, as well as the identification of relevant social development and education experiences in these three countries, is one of the Project’s major results. EDUCAVIDA can be credited with successfully incorporating the concept of co-responsibility for school governance into the national education debate, educational policy-making and the mass media.
In the wake of the Estelí meeting, organizers intend to strengthen these co-operation agreements an effort which is predicated on the active participation of all citizens committed to improving education.
From the perspective of UNESCO's Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean, rural education represents a priority for the continent, as several diagnostic studies confirm that rural sectors concentrate the highest levels of poverty and illiteracy, and are characterised by highly selective and low quality educational systems.
